Yellow days is a synth bedroom pop singer from Manchester. He has a really interesting sound, it’s kind of a blend of funk, rnb, soul and indie rock. On this album he really lent into the rnb side of his music, while his previous albums were more traditionally indie pop rock. On some of the songs this created a very unique version of Yellow Day’s voice. Unfortunately though on many of the songs, the overwhelming synth funk inspired instrumentals took over the song and pushed the vocals to the back. This definitely wasn’t a good look for him, because it made the songs sound blander then they actually are. I could definitely see Yellow Days working all this out and perfecting the funk instrumentals in a way that also allows his goofy and clever songwriting to be heard. I can hear a lot of “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye on this album, in how the music and the vocals interact with each other. I have quite a controversial and hot take about “What’s Going On” btw (I don’t like it as much as everyone else seems to).
