I love a good concept album. Especially when the concept is a place. It shows a lot of skill to create an entire city-specific vibe with 21 songs. Big Sean managed to do this on Detroit 2. Lots of people don’t really like Big Sean, some say he is corny or lame. I’ve never really thought of him as particularly bad, just not the top of the rap game or anything. This album is a bit of a long one, but overall I like how it was structured, with Story telling interludes featuring Dave Chapelle, Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder. I think most of the songs on here are pretty good as whole and Sean’s verses are well written. I liked almost every song. The feature list was great as well, sometimes it’s nice for a big hip hop release like this to have a fat feature list to look forward to. My main complaint with this album is that on some songs, Sean comes off as kinda pretentious. Also he has some pretty poor lyrics, like even ones that were anti vax like on “lucky me”, a song which I really like, but the disses on western medicine through me off. Don’t say that Big Sean, not with your platform. This album has some really good stuff, I think you’d really enjoy it if your a bit of a Hip-Hop traditionalist. This is the best album about Detroit since “Michigan” by Sufjan Stevens. Also Vaccinate your kids, don’t be stupid.
Favourite Songs: Why Would I Stop, Lucky Me, Deep Reverence, Guard Your Heart, Respect It, Full Circle, Friday Night Cypher, Still I Rise
Score: 8/10
