Album Review: June 5 2020

Ziggy Ramo is a rapper from Sydney. He is a triple J unearthed regular, but this album has made him gain some wider recognition. This album, in response to the protests in Australia right now, is an account of the Aboriginal experience. Ziggy makes a lot of really good points about exploiting and stealing Aboriginal culture. He describes the judgement he receives from white Australians and he empowers the Indigenous listeners. I loved how this was a creative, lyrical take down of mainstream Australia and the anthem and Australia Day and every other racist tradition. Ziggy’s words often had double meanings, which made the songs fun to unpack. However I do wish his flow was a little less cut and paste. I felt like he didn’t switch it up enough from song to song. I think this essential listening for the Australian public right now. Even though there is a lot of talk about racial injustice now, it’s not a new thing. We need to remember, respect and acknowledge the traditional custodians, not just now, but always. We need to not make Aboriginals feel unwelcome on their own land. Black lives matter.
