We can all breathe a sigh of relief because Lady Ga Ga’s singer-songwriter phase is over. Chromatica is more Dance pop than indie pop and I think that that works better for her. The production is really busy, it features a range of effects, along with catchy drum and bass beats and some monstrous synths. The instrumentation was probably the highlight. Unlike on her other albums this one has Lady Gaga singing about self hatred, dealing with negative emotions and growing up. I thought it was cool that she was being so uncharacteristically introspective, but the meanings of the songs were not so clear. I only understood after reading the pretentious ass liner notes that were added to the songs on Spotify (Storyline). Also (I don’t know her personally so I don’t know what she’s going through) some of the lyrics describing her mental state just seemed insincere to me. It might be because she’s Lady Gaga or it might be because some of those lyrics were really cliched. Her singing was of course outstanding and works so well with this style of music. However there were parts where her voice was edited so heavily that it became really annoying after a 3 minute song. But really I’m just glad to see that she’s over the whole “Star is Born” thing.
