Alestorm are a pirate metal band. All of their songs are about the pirate life. It’s incredibly entertaining most of the time and their album, “No Grave but the Sea” is a classic. On this new album, they have a wide range of very good songs and very bad songs. A sign of a very bad Alestorm song is 1. More vulgar than the others 2. Tries to be funny but isn’t 3. Tries to do too much (e.g. cringy rap verse on “Tortuga”). The signs of a great Alestorm song are 1. Catchy 2. Loud, fast and chanty 3. Sounds like some sort of call to arms. This was a mixed bag. A couple of the songs were great and didn’t try to do anything fancy they just were energetic the whole way through. They made you feel like you were on a ship in rough seas, everything you need from an Alestorm song (Call of the Waves) I fear, as this is 7th album, they may be running low on material. I really hope not. This album included “16th century version” of all the songs. Which were an electronic spin on the original metal sound. It wasn’t too bad, if you want something different and actually ended up improving some of the songs.

Favourite Songs: Fannybaws, Call of the Waves, Wooden Leg Part 2 (the Woodening)

Score: 4.7/10
