Die Antwoord are an Experimental Alternative hip-hop foursome from South Africa. There are rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser, a married couple, there are also two producers. Lots of their lyrics in Afrikaans, so I can’t understand those, but many of the hooks and choruses and random phrases throughout the album are in English. The group have been known for some scandals and also just weird behaviour, there have been accusations of Yolandi and Ninja being siblings, the four of them are currently co-parenting a child and last year they were all involved in a hate crime. The music reminds me of the album “iridescence” by BROCKHAMTON, except less conventional in a way. I really liked the contrast between the two voices, both equally aggressive and definitely have their own personality, even though I couldn’t understand it. Yolandi’s voice in particular is very unique to me, her voice is extremely high pitch, I’m not sure if it’s natural or altered. Either way it strangely works well when she’s aggressively rapping in half English half Afrikaans, she really shines on “ZONKE BONKE”. I couldn’t understand the lyrics in this album, therefore I couldn’t grasp a deeper meaning, but it was still super enjoyable.

Favourite Songs: ZONKE BONKE, HO$H HO$H HO$H, FUTURE BABY.

Score: 8.3/10
