Charli XCX is an English pop star who is well and truly on the rise. In my opinion she is currently taking the Lady Gaga torch of weird experimental electro-pop. But she is bringing this particular genre to a new level of experimental production. The production on this album is masterful. At times it’s springy and light, but then it goes industrial, robotic and almost has a creepy quality. The combination of synths, miscellaneous sounds and distortion was awesome. It was perfect. It was able to get a new stance on the pop genre, but it didn’t feel forced. I can’t say enough nice things about this album’s production, but moving on. The subject matter of the songs was love, mental health and quarantine (as this album was all made during lockdown). Charli references things her therapist has told her in songs about relationship troubles (“enemy”). She describes the quarantine’s effect on mental health (“I finally understand”). She even has some very traditional love pop (“forever”). I predict this album to be the best thing to come out of quarantine. It’s Robyn meets Death Grips meets Siri.

Favourite Songs: pink diamond, forever, claws, detonate, enemy, c2.0.

Score: 8.8/10
