The Beths are a indie rock band from Auckland. This is their second album. On their last album, they made catchy garage rock songs that describe things like teenage romance, mental health and the general Oceanian high school experience. On this album the continue with that theme. The song “I’m Dying to Believe” describes chasing a toxic relationship. This song is really well written. Better than the songs on their debut. In general they sound more mature now. But this loss of innocence also means loss of personality or character and a lot of what I loved about their debut. As well as this instrumentally it’s messyish and kind of incoherent. It’s just not as air tight as the last album was. However it wasn’t all completely bad. I liked the songs “Out of Sight” and “Mars, the God of War”. These songs were ridiculously catchy, just like the Beths of old. This album was so-so, the debut is so much better.
Favourite Songs: Dying to Believe, Out of Sight, Mars, the God of War
6/10
