Car seat headrest- I think Car Seat Headrest is one of the most important bands of the 2010s. Their music is often an interesting, catchy, emotionally charged and well written depiction of depression. Car Seat Headrest is mainly the work of Will Toledo, the singer and mastermind. In this album we are introduced to Will’s mask-wearing alter ego, named Trait. Trait is meant to represent Will’s negative feelings about indie fame and success. (“Hollywood”). This album has a more low-key quality than I’m used to, for them. The lyrics were much more soft spoken compared with say “Teens of Denial”. I think that the shouted, manic choruses is what made Car Seat Headrest special to me and so this change made them sound bland and more generic. The music on this album was an outlier if their discography too. It was more ambitious, synth heavy with more complex rhythms. The song writing though was just as strong and powerful as in some of their best songs, just not delivered in a way I would like. Overall “Making a Door Less Open” wasn’t bad, it was just different.
Favourite Songs: Can't Cool Me Down, Hollywood, Deadlines (Thoughtful)
Score: 5.7/10
