Phoebe Bridgers is a Californian indie folk singer. My only past experience with Phoebe is a collaborative album she made with Conner Oberst, which I really liked. But I had only heard great things about her first album, “Stranger in the Alps”. This is now her second album. Above all else this album is sad. It’s sentimental and heartbreaking. It’s not completely obvious at first how sad it is, you really have to listen to the lyrics. Which were as emotional as they were creative and smart. She does the indie rock thing of putting nostalgia into her music without the listener actually experiencing the memory in question. I love it so much. The instrumentation was pretty good too. Some songs were a bit more traditional indie rock than others. (Like “Kyoto”). The others used horns and some interesting electronic things. Phoebe’s voice is so so great, it’s haunting and soft and puts you in a trance. If you want heart crushingly tragic and intense songs and you haven’t listened to this, do it. But it does seem like I’m the last to listen. Oh well. I’m probably gonna go listen to her other album now.
Favourite Songs: Garden Song, Kyoto, Punisher, Halloween, Saviour Complex, Graceland Too, I know The End
Score: 9/10
