Marlins Dreaming is an alt rock band from New Zealand. This album features a quite interesting blend of the common Antipodean indie rock with strong psychedelic elements. I thought that the instrumentation was great. They used synth notes as a fun way to change the beat in the middle of the song. The slow guitar and drumming added to the melancholy mood of the vocals. The Vocals sounded echoed, ominous and a bit spacey. The drawn out singing made me think of Car Seat Headrest. Although I do feel like you hear this type of singing everywhere. So some of the more sad boy songs are almost a parody of themselves (“Outwards Crying”). The song writing was pretty good, a bit too Pink Floyd for me, but was not as outrageous. On the song “Alike” there is a dialogue between two people, sung by one voice. I thought it was an interesting concept but could’ve been done better. I really liked “Moth Eyes”, this song is the most light hearted on the album, I loved the specific, innocent descriptions, the great harmony and the hook. It’s my highlight for this album. But overall I enjoyed the rest of it too, there’s even a social isolation reference on line 1 of track 1. I don’t know if intentionally.

Favourite Songs: Cabbage Tree, Mr. Sun, Moth Eyes, Filling in Time

Score: 6.8/10
