I’m not a metal head at all, but I’m trying to get into it. Devilskin are a metal band from New Zealand. This album is on the lighter side of metal, kind of Nu Metalish. Vocally this album was a mix, parts had the classic metal death growl, but also hooks and choruses that reminded me more of Emo Rock. When I listen to music of this kind it’s hard to really get into it and appreciate it, because I’m reminded so much of WWE entrance music. I’m sure there’s more to this album musically than I’m conscious of. To me the most enjoyable parts were the infectious and exciting hooks, that I thought were complemented well, with the energy of the rest of the instruments. There are some songs that completely ditch the metal aspect and goes fully Emo, “Bright Eyes”, “Endo”. Overall I wasn’t really into this one, I found the metal parts to be super bland, I would even go so far as to call it “Pop Metal”. The Emo parts, as expected, were mostly unbearably lame. I would say that the best songs are the ones where the two genres are combined. If you listen to this, please let me know if I’m not picking up on some great quality, because I don’t know what I’m talking about.
