It’s probably quite unlikely for two rappers to hit their prime in their 40s. El-P and Killer Mike are veteran artists, who, before teaming up to form Run The Jewels, were under appreciated by the hip hop mainstream. Both of them are incredibly talented rappers, both making it into my top 50, El-P is a great producer and this is their 4th album as a duo. RTJ 1-3 were great albums, but they mainly just showcased their lyrical ability and none of the songs had really deep meanings. RTJ4 is the most politically driven of the RTJ series. El-P and Killer Mike speak on racism, police brutality and criticism they’ve received as an interracial duo. As always the songs are fast paced, gritty, tough and fun. These are some of the best rap songs I’ve heard all year and it’s thanks to the hard hitting, creative lyrics that they always bring to every album. The contrast between Killer Mike’s dungeon family style and El-P’s strong New York Accent has become iconic. They are a little bit of an unlikely pairing, but we should thank god every day that they found each other. Run the Jewels are one of the best things going in not just hip-hop, but music and not just music, but life. They can’t seem to do anything wrong.

Favourite Songs: yankee and the brave, ooh la la, holy calamafuck, walking in the snow, never look back, the ground below

Score: 9.1/10
