Spacey Jane are a indie rock band from Fremantle. I’ve been aware of them for about a year maybe, this is their debut album. If I’m honest, I was not expecting a whole lot in terms of of musical ingenuity, and it was a little bit generic, but not as cookie cutter as I was expecting. I feel like this album is good if you want some easy listening Australian indie jams, however I also think there’s a little bit more there. A lot of the songs take the Trojan Horse approach of storytelling and expression. Meaning they’re really upbeat, happy sounding, sunny songs with sadder lyrics.

The lyrics are about regret, break ups and guilt. One of my favourite ways they did this was by comparing the vulnerability and helplessness of a relationship ending with the feeling of being a child in a booster seat (“booster seat”). Booster seat is a great great song. I did really enjoy the writing on this album, but I found the accompanying music a bit boring. It was just really similar to every other band in Australia at this point. But I guess Spacey Jane do it better than most.

Favourite Songs: Good for You, Wasted on Me, Booster Seat, Straightfaced

Score: 5.9/10
