The New Toronto 3 - Tory Lanez definitely showed his influences on this album, there were various songs where I had to check if it was a drake feature or not. There were some nice verses here and there, but the songs were all quite mediocre. Apart from, what I thought was a great track “Stupid Again”, it was fluid, fun and passionate, I could see it becoming a hit. I just wish the lyrics weren’t so unpleasant. Tory comes off as super unlikeable throughout, he mentions seducing his girlfriend’s friends, light anti-semitism and the constant narcissism is so gross. He explores topics such as life and death, mental health and drugs. He does become quite introspective, observing his risk of overdose, due to his lifestyle and the death of some of his peers. Although these points were a highlight of the album, the rest mainly was cringe-spirational pop rap in the same vain as Drake (at times), Joyner Lucas or even (shudder) Hopsin. I learnt from this album, that Toronto has a unique hip-hip sound that has stretched passed Drake’s discography. While yet to be perfected on a non-Drake mixtape, I’m excited for its future.
